Who We Are Gertrud Malashanko founded the Sanilac County Humane Society in 1996, as a 501(c) (3) non-profit, 'no-kill' shelter. We are a small, independent, volunteer-operated humane society and we are dedicated to saving lost, homeless, abandoned and owner surrendered animals and finding for them, good and loving permanent homes. We also save animals from the county Animal Control facility. All of the saved animals are spayed or neutered, as required by Michigan law, before being offered for adoption. As more volunteers join us, we participate in the community affairs offering information about us and about responsible pet ownership and care. We are located in the "Thumb" area of Michigan, in Carsonville, which is approximately 8 miles to the east of Sandusky, on M-46. Our shelter is located at 3847 Sheldon Street, one block South of M-46, at the west edge of town.

THE ADOPTION PROCESS Our adoption process is focused on the welfare of animals. It includes an application, personal and vet reference check, and an interview. Our goal is to do what is in the best interest of each animal in our care. The fees we ask include the costs of feeding, sheltering, vaccinations, worming, spaying or neutering (required by law), necessary tests and other expenses preparing the animals for adoption. Our adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $175.00. Our adoption fee for cats and kittens is $75.00. Fees may reduced if an appicant is approved to adopt more than one animal at the same time. Before the adoption, applicants have a chance to meet and view the pet.
